Module 1 - Practicals Flashcards
how to make a standard solution
-weigh your alkaline into a weighing boat and transfer to a beaker
-add distilled water and stir until dissolved
-transfer to volumetric flask using a funnel
-rinse beaker and add washings to flask
-fill v. flask with water until line
-invert to mix
how to find conc of acid by titration
use a pippete and filler to transfer 25cm3 standard sol to conical flask
add drops of methyl orange
fill buretter with HCl
record initial reading
add HCl to flask until end point
add acid drop by drop
colour will change
record final reading
repeat
what are some errors
not all alkaline may be transferred (from weighing boat to flask)
ensure not to spill solution
swirl flask to ensure reactants are mixed
use a white tile to observe the colour change better
what are hazards
HCl causes severe skin burns
methyl orange can be toxic
what are concordant results
titres that are 0.1 within eachother
