What does a medical word consist of?
Word root: the foundation of a medical term and contains its primary meaning.
Combining form:
Suffix: in medical terminology, a suffix, usually describes a pathology symptom, surgical or diagnostic procedure, a part of speech.
-To link a suffix that begins with a vowel, use the word root. -To link a suffix that begins with a consonant, use a combining form.
Prefix: Not all medical terms have a prefix.
What are combining forms?
-When a word root is combined with a vowel.
-Usually an “o” but sometimes an “i”.
3 steps to defining medical words
- Define the suffix, or last part of the word. Ex. -itis = inflammation
- Define the first part of the word (which may be a word root, combining form, or prefix). Ex. Gastr/o=stomach
- Define the middle parts of the word. Ex. Enter=intestine.
3 steps for building medical word
- A word root links a suffix that begins with a vowel
- A combining form (root+o) links a suffix that begins with a consonant
- A combining form links one root to another root to form a compound word.
