Personal Area Network (PAN)
(most basic network) transmit data through short-distance objects that are contained in a room (desktop, phone, laptop, or speaker)
Local Area Network (LAN)
Network located in a single site (home/office building)
functions of a LAN
File/Application Sharing, Resource sharing
Wide Area Network (WAN)
covers a broad range of geographic area (usually lots of LANS connected to each other)
Circuit switched WAN link
circuits provided to for businesses by long-distance carriers(using a phone network would be an example)
Digital Subscriber Line WAN link
high speed internet access delivered through existing telephone networks
Packet switching WAN link
packets of data sent by switches along the best route possible by using the logical address of the destination node
Leased Lines WAN link
reserved circuits for a specific customer
Wireless broadband internet communication WAN link
its like WIFI but with higher speeds and greater distances
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Within several blocks of a city or an entire city, so everything within that city is connected (Larger than LAN but not as big as WAN) like the internet
Centralized Computing
Very large and powerful central computer
Peer to Peer (P2P)
Any computer can provide resources to any other of the computers
Client/Server
One giant server that accepts and rejects requests within its network (like online multiplayer, where u log in and u are in that server as a client)
