Define Violence
Intentional harm against oneself, another person, or a group or community.
Some groups are more susceptible to violence than others.
Results in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation.
Define Discrimination
Unfair or prejudicial treatment of individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation).
Results in unequal opportunities or outcomes for certain groups.
Define Stigmatization
Refers to the act of treating someone or something as unworthy or disgraceful, often based on stereotypes or misconceptions.
Involves labeling individuals or groups in a way that leads to social disapproval and exclusion.
Define Privilege
invisible package of unearned benefits of belonging to a dominant social group that confer advantage.
Define Gender
Socially constructed roles, behaviours, and expectations that are ascribed to men (and boys) and women (and girls).
Define Victim
Person who suffers harm, injury or loss as a result of a crime, accident, or other event or action.
Define Gendered Violence
Someone who experiences harm due to acts of violence that are rooted in or related to their gender.
Define Survivor
Someone who has suffered victimization.
Recognizes their role in dealing with their experience and their ability to exercise that role to make choices.
Define Perpetrator
Person that initiates hostile or violent actions against another.
Define Cisgender
Gender identity matches the sex assigned at birth.
Define Transgender
Gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth.
Define Bigender
identify as two genders, either simultaneously or switching between them.
Define Two-Spirit
Person who embodies both masculine and feminine qualities in the context of some Indigenous cultures in North America.
Define Gender Non-Conforming
Person whose gender expression does not fit societal expectation for their assigned gender.
Define Non-Binary
People who don’t exclusively identify as male or female.
Can include genderqueer, genderfluid, and agender
