module 1 Flashcards
adverse effects
undesirable effects that is direct response to 1+ drugs
pharmacotherapeutics
treatment of pathological conditions through use of drugs
pharmacokinetics
what happens to a drug from entering the body until parent drug & metabolites have left the body.
pharmacodynamics
study of biochemical & physiological interactions of drugs at site of activity.
bioavailability
measure of drug absorption for given drug & route. rated from 0-100%
first pass effect
intitial metabolism of liver form drug absorbed in gastrointestinal tract before drug reaches systematic circulation through the blood stream
contraindications and precautions
renders form of undesirable symptoms from treatment
drug interaction
alteration in pharmacokinetic or pharmacologic activity of a given drug with presence of 1+ drugs. usually effects of enzymes
prototype drug
.
pharmacogenomics
influence of genetic factors on drug response
generic name
name given to drug by united states adopted names council. also called nonproprietary name. not protected by trademark
agonist
drug that binds to and stimulates the activity of one or more receptors in the body
antagonist
drug that binds to and inhibits the activity of one or more receptors also known as inhibitor
therapeutic index
ratio between toxic and therapeutic concentrations of drug
therapetuic range
the level at which it is safe to take to give you a therapeutic response but also the level where it is not lethal
