What were some historical circumstances for the idea of rights?
Capitalist expansion, hierarchies, feudal authoritarianism, bourgeois, war (religious), servitude and slavery, persecution of women (witch hunt)
Who were Kondiaronk and Rousseau
- Kondiaronk was a 17th century Wendat intellectual who criticized European way of life
- Rosseau was a Euro scholar and was impressed by this view, wrote an essay on it inspiring conversations
What were the 3 estates?
The French classes. 3rd was 98% of pop. (20m peasants). Broke off and started the revolution
What are negative rights?
Rights that are obligatory, can’t be enforced or taken away. Civil and political
What are positive rights?
Body of laws created and enforced. laws that require action. Reproductive rights
What are Natural Rights/Laws?
Moral principles that form the basis of justice.

- Guadeloupe wants french citizenship but freedom.
- 243 killed 22 and ransacked plantations, had support/sympathy of people
- Christophe appoints himself king in 1811, forced labour, suicide after lost support
- Haiti is the first nation to abolish slavery in 1794
