Primary Article (empirical study)
a study that aims to gain new knowledge on a topic through direct or indirect observation and research. Usually contains abstract, introduction, methods, results and discussion (IMRaD)
Review Article
provides a summary of existing research in a field/topic area
Narrative Reviews (literature reviews)
type of review article. summarize some of the existing literature/evidence.
Scoping Reviews
type of review article. broad reviews that aim to gather as much evidence as possible and maps the evidence into themes.
Systematic Review
type of review article. highly structured reviews that utilize pre-planned methods to include/exclude articles.
Meta-Analysis
a type of research study that combines and/or analysis data from different primary studies (usually) in a new analysis in order to strengthen the understanding of a particular topic.
Case Studies
report specific instances of interesting phenomena. often used in medicine to make other researchers aware of the possibility that a specific phenomenon might occur.
Variable
something that can be measured and/or observed
Theories
summarize results from a variety of studies that address related phenomena
Construct
a concept drawn from measurement or observation of one or more variables. capture the “what” of theories.
