Module 0.1 Flashcards
Psychology as a Science
What is Psychology
Psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes, it answers questions about how and why we think, feel, and ultimately act the way that we do. It is viewed as a science.
Why is Psychology Viewed as a science?
Psychology is viewed as a science because it uses research and interprets data results as a way to separate self-made opinions from actual conclusions drawn through examination.
What are three key elements of the Scientific Attitude?
- Curiosity
- Skepticism
- Humility
What is the Scientific Attitude?
This means one is skeptical but not cynical while still being opened minded and not gulable. Its necessary to be aware of our own vulnerability to error and openness to surprises and new perspectives.
What is an important thing to remember about Scientific Attitude?
Its important to remember to not except things blindly as fact.
What do the three key elements of Scientific Attitude do?
Curiosity can cause predictions to be confirmed, Skepticism helps us to not doubt everything but also to not believe everything, and Humility allows us to explore further when the unexpected happens.
What is another term for Critical Thinking?
Smarter Thinking.
What are two developing arguments for the Scientific Attitude?
- Identify the reasoning against extrasensory mind-reading. (No one has been able to demonstrate it, therefore its unknown if its possible.)
2.Using scientifically derived evidence and explain why skepticism is important in science. (You need to be able to shift out reality from fantasy, to do this you need to be skeptical in a healthy way.)
What does Critical Thinking encourage us to do?
Examine assumptions, assess conclusions, evaluate evidence, appraise the source, and discern hidden bias.
What is Critical Thinking?
Thinking that does not automatically except arguments and assumptions/conclusions, it instead examines them.
Its important to remember…
to not use factual claims that are based on your gut
What does Critical Inquiry do?
Critical Inquiry surprises us but can also debunk popular presumptions by checking intuitive fiction with factual evidence (scientifically).
