Elision
One or more chord group is skipped in a left to right sequence. ie. I-iii-IV (skips vi) group 3 in the order
Neutral Tonic
When tonic appears anywhere in a normal chord progression prior to the dominant.
Retrogression
Chords move from right to left (group 1-4) followed by a normal progression
ie. I-ii-vi-ii-V-I, ii to vi is group 3 back to group 2.
Altered Dominant Chords
“Alt” at minimum the 5th and 9th are chromatically altered
Based on the super locrian scale (altered dominant scale or diminished whole tone scale)
Possible alterations are: b5, #5, b9, #9, #11, b13
Tip: play the melodic minor a half step up from the chord
Suspended Chords
Sus- alteration of the 3rd - sus4 and sus2
