Stacks at Giverny (Monet)

Salient Features: Broken brushstrokes impasto = paint applied on surface where brushstrokes are visible. pure unblinded colors, emphasis’ the effect of lighting. NO use of black!

Context: Stepped away from traditional art in the 20th century. The idea was that thought and instructions create the form of art.
Captured the essence of what’s alive. Artists started to create their own paint. Started plein air painting to capture the true setting.

Fun Fact: Was the founder of Impressionism
-Was interested in the portrayal of light
-Created many paintings to capture different seasons

Water Lilies (Monet)

Salient Features: Complimentary colors draw attention to the eye, such as the water (focused on the reflection, not the horizon) impasto = within the thick lily pads, conceptual art =the impression of reflection of tree on water & focuses on what’s being alive between the subject.

Context: Stepped away from traditional art in the 20th century. The idea was that thought and instructions create the form of art.
Captured the essence of what’s alive. Artists started to create their own paint. Started plein air painting to capture the true setting.

Fun Fact: Was the founder of Impressionism
-Was interested in the portrayal of light

Lunchen of The Boating Party (Renoir)

Salient Features: Landscape= Background is blurred. People= depicting middle class, everyone is talking to someone except for the girl in the back who is starring the viewers. Still life = realistic/vibrant colors draw the viewer’s eye, no use of black

Context: Was rejected by the Academy. Post WW1, during the 20th century a new form of art was introduced (modernism) but was rejected by the Academy because they claim modernism wasn’t true art.
-Artists turned away from tradition and focused on the thought/instructions rather than the appearance.
It was seen as an “impression.” Which later on Monet created Impressionism
-Artists started to advance in new technology such as allá prima painting (wet-on-wet), Indirect painting (consecutive layers) and the French easel box

Fun Fact: The lady on the left is his future wife to be
-Had arthritis but kept moving.

The Child’s Bath (Cassatt)

Salient Features: Isometric = flat, this concept was influenced by Japanese woodblock art. Soft/complementary color palette (no use of black) Geometric = focusing more on the concept than the appearance.

Context: Was rejected by the Academy. Post WW1, during the 20th century a new form of art was introduced (modernism) but was rejected by the Academy because they claim modernism wasn’t true art.
-Artists turned away from tradition and focused on the thought/instructions rather than the appearance.
It was seen as an “impression.” Which later on Monet created Impressionism

Impression, sunrise (Monet)

Salient Features: Impasto = messy thick brushstrokes, the water is foreseen as conceptual art = viewing the water’s reflection off the boat and sun as a concept instead of its appearance. The lighting is effective from the sun as it contains vibrant colors with the sky it draws our eye.
