The Course of Empire: The Savage State

Salient Features = -Chiaroscuro; provides light opening up. The spotlight is directed towards the mountain.
-Sublime; The way the clouds are shaped creates the “sublime” (something so beautiful but scary at the same time.
-The Teepees; tells us the Natives are not settled
-The mercy of nature is dominate

Context: -One of his goals was to Elevate landscaping. -During this time period was the Westward Expansion and he wanted to find “American Art.” EXPLOSION IS CIVILIZATION!
-Cole was skeptical of progress & democracy; believed we’re going to self destruct if have to much of a voice WHICH IS WHY WE MUST LIVE IN HARMONY (VIRGIN EDEN)
-(Manifest Destiny) = expand its dominion, use God’s gift of nature.

The Course of Empire: The Arcadian or Pastoral State

Salient Features: -Stone Henge; which the smoke is coming out of provides permanent structure
-Boats; the time people were traveling & trading goods which is the idea of civilization
-Stump in the right hand corner; cut down by man is an early sign of civilization. Man wanting to dominate over nature instead of living in harmony with nature.

Context: -One of his goals was to Elevate landscaping. -During this time period was the Westward Expansion and he wanted to find “American Art.”
-(Manifest Destiny) = expand its dominion, use God’s gift of nature.
-What Landscape is unique!? And what is the purpose of nature!??

Nuance:
-He was the founder of Hudson River school
-Development of logic & Art = the person on the left hand corner with the stick.

Salient features: -The People; representing how man is dominant. The buildings they created are covering nature.
-Statue of Athena; representing victory & warfare; eliminating the balance of nature and man.
-The Greek architecture; such as the dome & columns provide modern era architecture blossoming
-Being blinded by Nature!!

Context: -One of his goals was to Elevate landscaping. -During this time period was the Westward Expansion and he wanted to find “American Art.” EXPLOSION IS CIVILIZATION!

Salient features -The statue is headless; representing man destroying man. (Statue being Watson from Watson and the Shark)
-The Sublime of the clouds
-The bridge the allegedly carried Ceasure is gone; used to represent unity in the civilization?

Salient feature -The greener and nature growing on the Corinthian column = nature trying heal/come back
-Picturesque = calming and pleasing to look at; after the destruction everything is still.

-Stone & brick = inspired by the Japanese (simplistic) (blending in with nature)

-The house is supposed to mimic the flow of the hill & land

Salient features -Organic Architecture = We should live in harmony with nature.
-Creates thick walls = helps protect the building from any eruption of an earthquake.
-Organic Architecture = We should live in harmony with nature (EX: the thick walls, the pond, the plants etc)
