Whereas
Alternative is the use of non mainstream practices in the place of orthodox medical treatment

and about 26% use over the counter treatment as its generally cheaper and easier can self treat
Why is there an increase in the use of CAM?
Popular dissatisfaction with orthodox medicine
fear of side effects, cannot get appointments, media scares, medical negligence, attitude of doctors
Widespread availability of health care information over the Internet
Increase in consumerism patient can choose what they want
increase in the amount of chronic diseases that modern medicine can only do so much for
desperation where modern medicine has not helped or worked people turn to alternative medicine
more positive patient therapist encounter the therapist makes time to talk to the patient feels more personal and less rushed than orthodox encounters
Need to reduce NHS costs

What are the user demographics of CAM?
Generally females (more educated open to talk about and aware about health)
Middle aged (menopause symptoms)
Higher socioeconomic group as they have the disposable income to spend on treatment
Ethnicity in some ethnicities may be common to use a complimentary medicine e.g. Chinese traditional medicine
Regional differences more common in the south of England where hippies collected and in rural areas where there a fewer resources so generally rely on passed down herbal remedies
What are herbal remedies ?
use of plants and plant extracts to treat illness can be brought over the counter and used to self treatment commonly available and the most commonly used in the uk
What are the areas of controversy surrounding CAM
Treatment widely available are the therapists qualified to give health advice many CAM practices are not regulated
Training in CAM differs where it is regulated some therapists do years of training whereas doctors can do short week course and then be qualified on therapy
Adversely affects the doctor patient relationship:
If complimentary treatment was downplayed by GP but worked for patient can lead to erosion of trust in doctor patient relationship puts less trust in the doctor and the profession
Issues with medication interactions particularly antidepressants can lead to heart failure
Limited evidence base for which to prove that CAM’s ar effective but in the short term if they are effective for the patient why not as they reduce NHS costs
