  • it presumes guilt
  • the police identify those who are “probably guilty”
  • free of any legal technicalities
  • few innocents will be convicted but that is “a price worth paying”

Right Realists as they argue crime is a rational choice.
- a problem which effects the poor

  • RETRIBUTION - offenders deserve punishment, (revenge), offender gets their “Just Desserts”
  • it is a backwards looking theory
  • Durkheim - Boundary Maintenance
    AO3: can be argued offenders deserve forgiveness

A
  • attempts to reintegrate an offender back into society
  • forward looking theory
    Types: Drug Treatment programs
    Aversion therapy (Eysenck) - discouraged bad behaviour by association (addiction)

  • Left Realism supports this aim
    AO3: RR argue rehab has limited success

Discuss the aims of a deterrence

A
  • making the offender and others discouraged from committing a crime
  • e.g; Prison Sentence / Fine
    HOWEVER; the recidivism rate shows that many prisoners are not deterred
    AO3: supported by the Social Learning Theory which states seeing a punishment would deter you from repeating
    AO3: 1/2 prisoners reoffend
