Models of Abnormality Flashcards
Biological model
Physical processes are key to human behavior
Biological basis and biological treatment
Psychodynamic model
Focus on unconscious internal processes and conflicts
Cognitive-behavioral model
Emphasis on behavior, the way in which it is learned, and the thinking that underlies behavior.
Maladaptive behaviors can be learned and changed
Humanistic-existential model
Role of values and choices. Pursuit of philosophical goals.
Client-centered therapy
Sociocultural model
Social and cultural forces as the keys to human functioning
According to the psychodynamic model, dynamic internal forces (unconscious) give rise to behavior, thought, and emotion. What does this mean?
Dynamic means that these forces interact with each other without our awareness, and our mental states are the result of their interactions
What is the Id, Ego, and Superego?
Id - instinctual needs,
Ego - rational thinking,
Superego - moral standards
What is the main principle of the object relations theory?
Humans are motivated by a need to have relationships with others
What is the humanistic principle?
Human are born with a natural tendency to be friendly, cooperative, constructive > driven to self-actualize
What is the existentialist perspective?
Humans must have an accurate awareness of themselves and live a meaningful - authentic - life in order to be psychologically well
What is the family systems theory?
Family is a system of interacting parts who interact in constant ways and follow rules unique to each family
Developmental psychopathology model
Integrates all models. Attention to the timing of influential variables
What is the principle of equifinality?
A number of different developmental pathways can lead to the same psychological disorder
What is the principle of multifinality?
People who have experienced a number of similar developmental variables may react to comparable current situations in different way and have different clinical outcomes
