Modelling atoms Flashcards
1
Q
What is Rutherfords atomic model?
A
- Developed a model having a nucleus (positive and neutral charges) surrounded by orbiting electron charges
- When experimenting to validate his theory, he passed alpha particle through to a sheet of gold paper, where it was shown that some particles slightly deviated or went straight through. This indicated that it was mostly empty space with a large concentration in the middle.
2
Q
What are the down falls of the Rutherford model
A
- It did not restrict the movement of electrons
- It did not explain why the electron did not continuously emit electromagnetic radiation
- Did not explain emission and absorption spectra
3
Q
What is the bohr model and what did it solve in reguards to the rutherford model?
A
- Looked at planks black body radiation and used that to explain electrons could only absorb and emit certain quanta of energy
- Electrons can only emit electromagnetic radiation when changing levels
