A
  • sometimes that land is owned by the government or agricultural landowners
    • result: conflict over the land
    • often after settling there, squatters will try to achieve land tenure (legal right to own the land), but can take time
    • to avoid eviction, squatters will often pool some money for landowners, offer bribes, or promise votes to politicians
