- still 1 CBD, but other centers are forming as well (manufacturing center technology centers, medical centers, educational centers)

- hotels, shopping, restaurants
- almost the multiple CBDs in one city
- edge cities have formed
Two-part CBD

- traditional market center
- modern high-rise center
- commercial “spine” attached
- quality of housing decreases as move away from CBD
Three-part VBD

- traditional CBD
- colonial CBD (large homes and broad streets)
- Market zone (informal economic activities)
- Residental zones based on ethnicity
- many african countries → multi-ethnic
- mining and manufacturing zone
- periphery → informal settlements
African City Model
- sometimes that land is owned by the government or agricultural landowners
- result: conflict over the land
- often after settling there, squatters will try to achieve land tenure (legal right to own the land), but can take time
- to avoid eviction, squatters will often pool some money for landowners, offer bribes, or promise votes to politicians
Southeast Asia
- no central business district
- center is a port
- multiple CBD (can be everywhere)
- around ethnicity
- housing and income for people → everywhere
- really nice CBD → not nice CBD
