Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Symptoms develop up to 2 weeks after first starting antipsychotic medication
Serotonin syndrome
Associated with antipsychotic use
Depression
3 core symptoms: low mood, anhedonia, anergia
Common in ppl with learning disabilities
Other symptoms: sleep disturbance, social withdrawal
Generalised anxiety disorder
Anxiety without stimulus persisting for 3 months
1st line tx: SSRI (paroxetine)
2nd line tx: venlafaxine
Avoid benzodiazepines due to high risk of dependence
Panic attacks/disorder
Trigger before panic attacks
Schizophrenia
Positive symptoms
Negative symptoms
Cannabis use is associated with 5x increase in risk of schizophrenia
1st rank symptom: delusion of passivity
Psychosis
Psychotic symptoms
Hallucination
Auditory, visual, olfactory
Pseudo-hallucination
Hears voices within
Associated with personality disorders
OCD
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Bulimia
Binge and purge
Anorexia nervosa
BMI < 18.5kgm-2
Consider patient for admission if: proximal muscle weakness
Complications: refeeding syndrome (may cause serious metabolic disturbances e.g., hypophosphataemia
