MOD F TECH 49 Haemodialysis Flashcards
Kidneys Functions
- Simple filtration
- Selective reabsorption
- Secretion
- Filter the blood to remove waste products such as urea
- Regulate salt and water balance
- Excrete Urine
Kidney stops working
Waste products Accumulate in blood
Causes:

This causes:
- Weakness
- Lethargy
- Build up of Toxins in the body which may cause itchy skin
Kidney Failure (includes)
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Inflammation
- Blockage
- Chronic Infection
Treatment Options
üContinuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)
üAutomated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD)
üHaemodialysis (HD)
üKidney Transplant (KT)
Haemodialysis
•Renal failure
•
•Three or four times a week
•
•Usually takes 3-5 hours but can take up to ten hours
Haemodialysis complications
•Hypotension
•
•Emergencies/sudden illnesses
•
•Leaking disconnected fistulas
•
•Serum hepatitis
Advantages of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis
- Patients can treat themselves
- Travel
- Feel more healthy
- Normal Diet
- Fluid intake is not severely restricted
- Quality of life
A.P.D. Automated Peritoneal Dialysis
•Information from the hospital Haemodialysis Unit
•
•Automated because the patient connects themselves up to a machine throughout the night, and sleeps through their dialysis.
•
•The APD machine then filters their blood while they sleep.
•
•Filtering normally occurs approximately 5-7 times throughout the night
