MOD 4: BLOOD/LYMPHATIC D&D (incomplete) Flashcards
Blood
Transport system of the body to deliver O2, glucose, hormones, & electrolytes to the body
Play significant role in the immune system
Body contains ~5L of blood
Blood Composition
Consists of;
~55% Plasma
~45% Red blood cells
<1% White blood cells & platelets
Plasma
55% of blood composition
Carries protein, water, & electrolytes
Carries albumin, globulins, fibrinogen
Clear & and yellowish fluid
Albumin
Maintains osmotic pressure in blood
Globulins
Antibodies
Fibrinogen
Clotting Factor
Anemia
General term for reduced delivery of O2 due to lower hemoglobin count
Caused by either
>Reduced RBC production
>Reduced RBC count
>Both
Anemia Symptoms
> Tachycardia
Increased peripheral vasoconstriction
Fatigue
Pallor
Dyspnea
GI ulcers
Inflamed epithelial cells
Dry skin & hair
Iron Deficient Anemia
Insufficient hemoglobin production due to reduced or lack of Iron
Leads to deformed and/or low concentration of hemoglobin
Iron Deficient Anemia Causes
Low iron diets
Chronic blood loss from
>Ulcers
>Haemorrhoids
>Cancer
>Menstrual Flow
Iron Deficient Anemia Symptoms
Mild = Asymptomatic
Severe (Chronic Hemoglobin Loss)
>Skin & Mucous Membrane Pallor
>Fatigue
>Lethargy
>Cold Intolerance
>Irritability
>Brittle hair & nails
>Dry skin
>Tachycardia
>Dyspnea
>Syncope
Iron Deficient Anemia Treatment
Iron
Pernicious Anemia
Insufficient hemoglobin delivery due to large and immature RBCs
Pernicious Anemia Causes
Deficit of Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) or Vitamin B12
Deficiencies are usually gradual
Higher occurrence in first 2 months of pregnancy
More often due to malabsorption than dietary deficiency
Pernicious Anemia Symptoms
