MOD 3: BLOOD VESSELS Flashcards
Blood Vessel Walls
3 Layers:
>Tunica Adventitia (Outer)
>Tunica Media (Middle)
>Tunica Intima (Inner)
*Capillaries only consist of a single layer
Blood Vessel Structure
Four Constant Structures
>Lining Endothelial Cells
>Collagen Fibres
>Elastic Fibres
>Smooth Muscle Fibres
Lining Endothelial Cells
> Line entire vessel
Inhibits intravascular coagulation (clotting)
Contains pores for diffusion
Can reproduce
Collagen Fibres
> Reinforce woven strands
Minimal stretch (2%-3%)
Strengthen walls
Elastic Fibres
> Made of elastin
Capable of stretching beyond 100%
Allows recoil post-distension
Maintains passive tension to maintain BP
Smooth Muscle Fibres
> Not found in capillaries
Most common of elastic and muscular arteries
Exhort active tension when contracting
Tunica Adventitia
> Outermost layer
Strong & flexible connective tissue
Helps hold vessel open
Prevents tearing of vessel during movement
Largest layer in veins
Second largest layer in arteries
Tunica Media
> Middle layer
Smooth muscle tissue
Sandwiched between elastic connective tissue
Muscle allows for changes in diameter
Innervated by the ANS
Largest layer in arteries
Second largest layer in veins
Tunica Intima
> Innermost layer
Extremely thin endothelial cells
Only layer present in capillaries
Contain semilunar valves in veins
Arteries
> Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart (san pulmonary artery)
Three kinds
>Elastic Arteries
>Muscular Arteries
>Arterioles
Veins
> Carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
