MOD 1: HEART PATHOLOGY (incomplete) Flashcards
Functions of the Heart
Generating blood pressure
Routing blood through pulmonary and systems
Regulating blood supply to meet metabolic needs (perfusion)
Heart Chambers
Left Atrium
Right Atrium
Left Ventricle
Right Ventricle
Atriums are superior
Ventricles are inferior
Chambers are separated by septum
Heart Valves
Atrioventricular Valves (AV Valves)
- Tricuspid & Mitral (Bicuspid) Valves
Semilunar Valves
- Pulmonary & Aortic Valves
Atrioventricular Valves (AV Valves)
Tricuspid Valve
- 3 cusps
- Connects the right atrium to the right ventricle
Mitral (Bicuspid) Valve
- 2 cusps
- Connects the left atrium to the left ventricle
Semilunar Valves
Pulmonary Valve
- 3 cusps
- Connects the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery
Aortic Valve
- 3 cusps
- Connects the left ventricle to the aorta
Heart Location
Located in the thoracic cavity between the lungs
Anteriorly rests between the 2nd-6th ribs
Posteriorly rests against the 5th-8th vertebrae
2/3 of the heart left of the midline (left lung is smaller due to this)
1/3 of the heart is right of the midline
Apex of the heart is resting atop the diaphragm
Size of the heart
4.75” long
3.5” wide
2.5” deep
‘Size of a fist’
Heart Pumps
Two pumps
Right Pump:
Low Pressure
Pulmonary Circulation
Left Pump:
High pressure
System Circulation
Right Pump
> Vena Cavas
Right Atrium
Tricuspid Valve
Right Ventricle
Pulmonary Valve
Pulmonary Arteries
Lungs
Left Pump
> Lungs
Pulmonary Vein
Left Atrium
Mitral (Bicuspid) Valve
Left Ventricle
Aortic Valve
Aorta
Coronary Arteries
Coronary Arteries
Branch directly off the Aorta above the Aortic valve
Split into left and right
Left Coronary Artery
- Left cusp of the Aortic valve
- Divides into the Left Anterior Descending Artery and Anterior Interventricular
- Supplies 65-75% of the blood supply to the left ventricle and septum
Right Coronary Artery
- Right cusp of the Aortic valve
- Divides into the Right Marginal Artery and Posterior Interventricular
- Supplies 25-35% of the blood supply to the left ventricle
- Supplies 100% of the blood supply to the right ventricle
Pericardium
Outer layer of the heart
Consists of
- Pericardial Cavity
- Pericardial Sac
- Fibrous Pericardium
- Serous Pericardium
Pericardial Cavity
Space filled with ~10-15mls
