Key features of revelation
-God’s self-revelation begins with Creation:
-God is revealed to Abraham and his descendants
-Jesus Christ is the fullness of God’s self-revelation:
God’s self-revelation begins with Creation
EXPL: From the beginning of time through to today, people can recognise the existence of the Creator when they reflect on the created universe.
QUOTE: “Since the creation of the world… God’s eternal power and divinity have become visible and recognised through the things he has made” (Romans 1:20).
God is revealed to Abraham and his descendants
EXPL: God revealed an unconditional love to God’s people over time and in various stages. God first chose Abraham and his descendants to be God’s own people and revealed more to different people at different times. The process of Revelation, then, is not primarily a body of truths or facts. Rather, it is the personal revelation of God to humanity
Jesus Christ is the fullness of God’s self-revelation
EXPL: The climax of God’s revelation is Jesus Christ. Before Jesus, God had made the people of Israel aware that he would send one, whom they came to refer to as the Messiah. To the Jews, the Messiah would have the task of restoring God’s kingdom.
Where does the belief of revelation come
From?
-Scripture (the Bible)
-Tradition (as taught by the Catholic Church’s teaching office, the Magisterium)
What is a covenant?
sacred verbal agreement or contract that bestows rights and requires obligations.
Name 3 important christian covenants
- The covenant with Abraham
- The covenant with Moses (at Mount Sinai)
- The covenant in Jesus Christ
What is different to those 3 covenants compared to others
involve a personal relationship with God.
What do these 3 covenants involve
Each offered a deeper relationship with God and involved:
-Promises by God
-Obligations if a relationship with God was to develop
-Greater intimacy with God provided people lived the
covenant faithfully
How does This Belief Find Expression in a
Religion? (catholic belief)
that God’s self-revelation begins with creation and the Bible continues in revealing God
How does This Belief Find Expression in a
Religion? (physcial)
Through scriptures
How does This Belief Find Expression in a
Religion? (covenant)
Covenants achieve intimacy with humanity by breaking through barriers that prevented this intimate
relationship- humans understand what God wants from us, moral code of behaviour
How does This Belief Find Expression in a
Religion? (present)
the Bible is described as a book of revelation that clearly defines the salvation of the human race in terms of God’s love and the opportunities He has given us to learn more about God and his Kingdom- the Bible is understood as a source that tells God’s loving plan of salvation
How does This Belief Find Expression in a
Religion? (jesus)
people discover and relate with God:
- Jesus is the redeemer
- In Jesus the nature of God and human nature became one
- Jesus conquered the power of sinfulness and Jesus redeems people from the power of Original Sin
- Jesus shares with believers the very nature of God
how does the Revelation relate to the lives of people?
-Is essential to the way people live because it is the truth
-It makes us know God and our relationship to Him as His created beings; therefore, we understand the reality of our existence
-It makes us understand our purpose and it thereby makes us understand life’s meaning or, in other words, it answers the ‘human heart questions’
-Through Scripture, Tradition and ‘lived experience’, the Magisterium gives guidance
on how we should live to achieve our human potential and happiness in God.
-Evidence that God will always seek us out and give us the opportunity to know him
-Confidence that God is always in an intimate relationship with people.
-Jesus gave us the Church and the Magisterium to keep his revelation authentic, to help us maintain holiness and to guide us in living life (Matthew 16:19, 28:19)
