Baseball suture
Most commonly used stitch; good for autopsies; pass ligature from side to side from beneath the incision.
Lock (Interlocking) suture
Leaves an unsightly ridge; leakproof; needle is fed through the loop each time; passed around both sides from the outside.
Whip (Roll) suture
Used to close long incisions; the needle is passed through both sides of the incision.
Worm suture
Also called draw or inversion; used to gather and turn in excess tissue; stitches are made parallel to the incision; good for carotid or cranial autopsy; follows the pattern of intradermal stitches above the skin.
āNā stitch
Surgical drains and devices; punctures; trocar punctures.
Purse string suture
Used to secure margins of holes; series of small stitches around the circumference; drawn tight to close.
