4 region plan
The abdomen is divided into four regions; upper right and left quadrants and lower right and left quadrants.
9 region plan
The abdomen is divided into 9 regions; right & left hypochondriac, epigastric, right & left lumbar, umbilicus, right & left inguinal and hypogastric.
Right Hypochondriac
The region of the abdomen that contains part of the liver, part of right kidney, greater omentum coils of small intestine and gallbladder.
Left Hypochondriac
The region of the abdomen that contains part of liver, stomach, fundus, and cardiac regions, spleen, tail of pancreas, left colic splenic flexure, part of left kidney and greater omentum.
Epigastric
The region of the abdomen that contains stomach including cardiac and pyloric openings, portion of liver, duodenum, pancreas, suprarenal glands, and parts of kidneys and greater omentum.
Right Lumbar
The region of the abdomen that contains lower portion of liver, ascending colon, part of right kidney, coils of small intestine, greater omentum and right colic (hepatic) fixture.
Left Lumbar
The region of the abdomen that contains part of left kidney, descending colon, coils of small intestine and greater omentum.
Right Inguinal (Iliac)
The region of the abdomen that contains cecum, appendix, part of ascending colon, coils of small intestine and greater omentum.
Left Inguinal (Iliac)
The region of the abdomen that contains part of descending colon, sigmoid colon, coils of small intestine and greater omentum.
Umbilicus
The region of the abdomen that contains transverse colon, part of body kidneys, part of duodenum, coils of small intestine, greater omentum, bifurcation of the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava.
Hypogastric
The region of the abdomen that contains bladder (in adults if distended), uterus during pregnancy, coils of small intestine and greater omentum.
