Mod 10 Flashcards
Ecosytem
An association of living organisms and their physical environment.
Biomass
A measure of the total dry mass of organisms within a particular region.
Watershed
An ecosystem where all water runoff drains into a single body of water.
Transpiration
Evaporation of water from leaves of a plant.
Greenhouse effect
The process by which certain gases (like water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane) trap heat that would otherwise escape the earth and radiate into space.
Name two mutualistic relationships we have learned about in this chapter briefly discuss the role of each participant.
- Clownfish and sea anemones - sea anemones protects the clownfish and the clownfish attracts food for the sea anemones.
- Blind Shrimp and goby - The goby warns this shrimp of predators and the blind shrimp shares its holes with the goby.
Does photosynthesis add oxygen to the air or remove it?
Add
Besides photosynthesis how else is Carbon Dioxide removed from the air?
It is dissolved into the ocean.
If surface runoff did not occur in the ocean shore ecosystem what would happen to the ocean?
It would eventually dry up.
Explain the statement greenhouse effect is a good thing, but global warming is too much of a good thing.
The greenhouse effect keep the earth warm global warming would heat the earth too much.
Is global warming occurring today?
No it is not.
What do nitrogen fixing bacteria provide to other organisms? Do they provide directly to producers or consumers?
Ammonia is provided by nitrogen fixing bacteria. They provide directly to producers.
