Catholic
Literally meaning “universal” or “worldwide” and affirming that the church is universal in scope.
Covenant
The act of God in freely establishing a mutually binding relationship with humankind.
Orthodoxy
“Right Praise” or “right belief” characterized by consistency in belief and worship with the Christian Faith.
Revelation
Refers both to the process by which God discloses the Divine nature and the mystery of the divine will and purpose to human beings, and to the corpus of truth disclosed.
Theology
The study of God and all things in relation to God.
Agnosticism
A system of belief in which personal opinion about religious statements is suspended because it is assumed that they can be neither proven nor disproven or because such statements are seen as irrelevant.
Deism
Belief that understands God as distant, in that God created the universe but then left to run its course on its own. Following certain “laws of nature” that God had built into the universe
Immanence
The idea God is present in close to and involved with creation.
Providence
Refers to God’s superintending activity over human actions and human history, bringing creation to its divinely determined goal
Transcendence
Attribute of God the refers to being wholly and distinctly separate from creation. Means that God is “above” the world and comes to creation from “beyond”
Worldview
A particular philosophy of life or conception of the world.
Trinity
The belief that God eternally exists as one being in three distinguishable but inseparable persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
General Revelation
Term used to declare that God reveals something about the divine nature through the created order.
Special Revelation
God’s divine self-revelation evidenced specifically in salvation history and culminating in the incarnation as understood through scripture.
