MOD 1 Perceptual Deficits Flashcards
What do patients with right cerebral hemisphere deficits experience?
most commonly have difficulty with attention, perception, learning, memory, recognition, expression of emotion, and neglect
What are spatial deficits in R cerebral hemisphere deficits?
inability tot attend to objects or people on their left side
What are nonspatial deficits in R cerebral hemisphere deficits?
inability to reorient attention, attend to novel stimuli, and maintain arousal and vigilance
What is unilateral spatial neglect and which hemisphere is usually involved?
inability to perceive and integrate stimuli on the contralesional side of the body
right hemisphere temporoparietal junction and/or posterior parietal cortex lesion
may affect one or more sensory domain
What are the implications for rehab with USN?
major cause of disability after stroke due to loss of independence
25-30% all stroke survivors in acute phase
90% right sided
low FIM scores
What are the PT assessment and implications with USN?
- move to midline in front of patient and ask them to look midline
- ask to follow object to midline and beyond
- education about protection of the patient’s affected side to prevent injury
- cue and challenge to have family sit more on affected when talking to patient
- modify environment
What is apraxia?
inability to execute purposeful movements despite motor strength, coordination, and sensation all being intact
What is ideomotor apraxia?
plan for the movement is intact but the execution fails
What is ideational apraxia?
planning the movement fails; patient in unable to conceptualize how a movement pattern must be organized
