Mock Research Methods Flashcards
What are 3 experimental designs
Independant groups
Repeated measures
Matched pairs
What does operationalise mean
To be precise and clear about what’s being manipulated and measured. To make it testable and repeatable
What are investigator effects
Bias from the investigator, unconscious influence
How do you get rid of investigator effects
Randomisation
Matched pairs design
•Pairs are matched based on similar variables, one of each pair is placed into a different condition
+ reduces p variables (bc similar ppl r matches)
+ No order effects (only one condition)
- time consuming and expensive
- impossible to match ppl exactly
Repeated measures design
The same p in both conditions
+ reset p requires
+ no individual differences
- order effects
How do you deal with order effects
Counterbalancing
(sample split into 2 groups, completed conditions in diff orders)
What are measures of dispersion
Standard deviation
Range
Independent groups
Different p put in each condition
+ no order effects
+ less demand characteristics
- more p= more time and cost
- individual differences can change results
