Mobility, Functional Ability and Safety Flashcards
Risks for Immobility
Traumatic Injuries ( Brain, Spinal Cord )
Neurologic ( Stroke )
Chronic Conditions ( COPD, Obesity )
Reducing Risk of Immobility
Regular Physical Activity
Protect against injury

Evidence Based Nursing Interventions for Impaired Mobility
Frequent Turning
Skin assessment
Range of Motion
Immobilize when needed

Collaborative Interventions
( Pharmacological Agents )
Anti-inflammatory agents
Analgesics ( pain medicine )
Nutrition supplementation
Assessing Fall Risk
Hendrich II Fall Scale
Score of 5+ is a risk
iADLS
Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) are things you do every day to take care of yourself and your home. They are one way to measure how well you can live on your own.
Ex: Cooking, cleaning, laundry
ADLS
Activities of daily living (ADLs) are basic self-care tasks like bathing, IADLs require more complex planning and thinking.
Ex: Bathing, showering, toileting
Katz Index of Activities of Daily Living Tool
Is the most appropriate instrument to assess functional status as a measurement of the client’s ability to perform activities of daily living independently.
Identify strategies to minimize loss of functional ability
Strength, balance and endurance training to aid physical function or reduce falls risk; retraining in specific activities of daily living tasks; and nutritional interventions.
- Promoting Independence
Hip Fractures
- Severe pain in hip, thigh, groin, lower back
- May be unable to walk/ stand
- Leg on injured side to appear SHORTER
- Result of fall possibly
Hip Fracture: Assess 6 P’s
- Pain
- Paraesthesia
- Paralysis
- Pulselessness
- Pallor
- Pressure
Complications associated with Immobility
- Atelectasis
- Skin breakdown
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Pneumonia
- Slowed peristalsis
- Weakness
- Muscle atrophy
Physical Therapy after Hip Replacement…
- No bending forward
- DO NOT Cross legs
- Don’t let toes inward
- Take small steps
Safety Guidelines AFTER Surgery
- Instructions on med use
- Use of assistive device ( walker )
- Keep all scheduled appointments
- Successful rehab- KEY!
