1 pathologic condition (risk factors)

A

Osteoporosis: when the body loses too much bone or does not make enough bone causing pain, loss of function, risks of falls, mortality (common, in 55% of people 50+) silent disease
risks:
- non-modifiable: female, Caucasian, Northern European ancestry, aging, Hx
- modifiable: osteopenia, low body weight, low Ca intake, vit D deficiency, estrogen deficiency/early menopause, low testosterone, inadequate activity, steroid use, excess coffee/alcohol, smoking

A
  • must begin in childhood and teen years and continue
  • encourage weight-bearing, physical activity and exercise
  • eat foods high in Ca, take supplements, vit D
  • reduce smoking/alcohol

Falls prevention

A

Universal Falls Risk (SAFE)
S - safe environment (5 safety checks)
A - assist with mobility (at least 2x/day, safe and regular toileting Q2-3hr, glasses, hearing and mobility aids)
F - fall and injury risk reduction (5 safety checks, proper footwear, hip protectors)
E - engage Pt and family/caregiver to discuss avoidable risk factors
