MOA of Hypertensive Medications Flashcards
Loop diuretics MOA
Inhibit active transport of sodium, chloride, and potassium in thick ascending limb of loop of henle causing excretion of these ions. Collecting duct excretes more water in response
Thiazides MOA
Inhibits sodium reabsorption in distal tubule
Aldosterone receptor blockers MOA
Competes with aldosterone and prevents sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion
Potassium sparing drugs MOA
Blocks sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion, effect independent of aldosterone
ACE-I MOA
Inhibits ACE which usually produces angiotensin 2
Also inhibits breakdown of bradykinin (vasodilator)
Dilate the efferent arteriole of kidney
ARB MOA
Inhibits angiotensin 2 at its receptor sites
Does NOT inhibit the breakdown of bradykinin
