where does MND first appear
Can go unnoticed until you try and use affected muscles
Can fist appear in any part of the body
Most frequently starts in arms (33%), legs (33%), and muscles controlling speech (25%)
how does MND progress
Spreads from the initial site of weakness
Slowly destroys nerves that control muscle movement
Causes muscular wastage, potentially leading to paralysis
Progresses very fast in some people and very slowly in others
what other conditions can MND be associated with
Is associated with Frontotemporal dementia in 15% of cases
Is associated with cognitive and behaviour changes in 35% of cases
Can prevent people swallowing food and drinking
Can prevent people from breathing properly
Can prevent people from communicating by speaking or writing
what triggers MND
Is triggered spontaneously, even when inherited
inherited in 5% of cases
cause unknown in 90% of cases
