Lower Trapezius

A

PRONE
Scapular adduction and depression
- STAND on contralateral side
- Shoulder abducted to 130 degrees and externally rotated; point thumb to ceiling, face away from side tested
- STABILIZE on other scapula
- PALPATE as pt goes through full ROM
- PRESS on ACROMION PROCESS in line with lower trap muscle fibers
- Note: Avoid pressing down on humerus, you are looking at GH muscles only

Middle trap

A

PRONE
Scapular adduction
- STAND on contralateral side
- Shoulder externally rotated; elbow bent at 90 degrees, palm down, face away from side tested
- STABILIZE on other scapula
- PALPATE as pt goes through full ROM
- PRESS on acromion process in line with middle trap muscle fibers
- Note: Avoid pressing down on humerus, you are looking at GH muscles only

Rhomboid

A

PRONE
Scapular adduction and downward rotation
- STAND on contralateral side
- Back of hand on low back region, shoulder internally rotated, head away from side being tested
- STABILIZE ipsilateral scapula
- PALPATE as pt goes through full ROM
- PRESS on medial border of scapula towards acromion process
- Note: Avoid pressing down on humerus, you are looking at GH muscles only

 Stabilize by laying one finger across PIP joints
 Instruct patient to lift fingers off table
 Pull down on each finger

o Stabilize by covering all fingers up to DIP joint
