What are features of measles?
Prodrome: irritable, conjunctivitis, fever
Koplik spots: white spots on buccal mucosa (Before rash)
Rash: starts behind ears then to whole body
Discrete maculopapular rash becoming blotchy and confluent
What type of virus is measles?
RNA virus
How is measles spread?
When is someone infective?
Incubation period
Droplet spread
Infective from prodrome until 4d after rash starts
Incubation of 10-14 days
What investigations in measles?
IgM antibodies within days of rash onset
What Mx for measles?
Supportive
Notifiable disease - inform public health
What Cx in measles?
Otitis media
Pneumonia
Encephalitis
Febril convulsions
What is mumps caused by?
Spread?
Incubation
RNA paramyxovirus
REspiratory droplet spread
14-21 days
What are CF of mumps?
Fever
Malaise, muscular pain
Parotitis: earache, pain on eating
Parotid swelling
What is Mx for mumps?
Rest
Paracetamol
Notifiable disease
What are complications of mumps?
Orchitis
Hearing loss - unilateral and transient
Meningoencephalitis
Pancreatitis
What is rubella caused by? Incubation period?
Togavirus
14-21 days
What are CF of rubella?
Prodrome: low grade fever
Rash: maculopapular initially on face before spreading to whole body
Lymphadenopathy: suboccipital and post-auricular
What are Cx of rubella?
Arthritis
Thrombocytopenia
Encephalitis
Myocarditis
What is MMR vaccine give?
12-15 months
3-4 years
