MLAB121 - Clotting Factors Flashcards
What is Hemostasis?
Process of stopping blood
Platelet activation includes?
Adhesion and aggregation
Steps of Platelet Activation
Vaso-constrict
Platelets activated, release granules and change shape
Two properties of Platelet activation
Adhesion - sticking to blood vessel wall
Aggregation - sticking together
Instrinsic Pathway include which Clotting Factors
Initiated by FXII -> FXI -> IX -> VIII
Problems in hemostasis
Insufficient or delayed clotting
Intravascular clotting
Hemaphilia A is deficient of?
Factor VIII
Defect of X chromosome
Hemaphilia B is deficient of?
Factor IX
Defect of X chromosome
Acquired disorders include?
Vit. K Deficiency Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) Heparin Coumadin (wafarin) Aspirin Liver disease Thrombophilia (excessive clotting)
Prolonged bleeding time has a low platelet count of?
Less than 50
4 QC for Bleeding Time Test
Do not touch incision when blotting blood
Record if patient has used aspirin
Proper PPE
Follow standard precautions
What does PT monitor?
Monitor oral anticoagulant therapy (Coumadin)
Reagent of thromboplastin?
Tissue factor III-phospholipid and CaCl
What factors deteriorate after 10min?
Factor VIII and Factor V
Reagents evaporates
Principle of clot detection
Uses viscosity to detect
Increased viscosity if measured through motion of stainless steel ball
Constant pendulum swings ball creates electromagnetic field
Once plasma clots, viscosity of plasma increases, slowing ball down
