Mixtures, Compounds and Elements Flashcards
Element
substances that cannot be split into anything simpler by chemical means and are only made of one atom.
Compound
made from combinations of two or more elements in fixed proportions, joined by strong bonds.
Mixtures
made of various substances which can be in any proportions in the same space that are not chemically combined.
What does elements look like?
one atom on it’s own.
NOTE : although they are one atom, does not mean they cannot join.
What does compounds look like?
strong bonds between the different element particles.
All of the small molecules should be the same.
They can be small or giant compounds with bonds.
What does mixtures look like?
2 different varieties or atoms or molecules with varying proportions.
Proportions in a mixture
varying
Proportions in a compound
fixed because of strong bonds.
Properties in a mixture
range of temperatures - different substances, different boiling and melting points
Properties in a compound
fixed, pure substance - only one element
Ease of separation in a mixture
separated physically
Ease of separation in a compound
separated chemically
energy changes in a compound
there will be an energy change, heat will be taken in or given out.
energy changes in a mixture
no temperature change
Atom
the smallest part of an element
