Diffusion, dissolving, solubility Flashcards
How does concentration be equal throughout beaker when solute is dissolved? (4 marks)
- Water particles bombard/collide with the solute
- Solute particles go into solution/dissolve.
- Solute particles spread out and move randomly
- Solute particles are distributed evenly in the water
How do you make a solution more dilluted?
Add more solvent
How can you tell if a solution is more diluted?
By looking at its colour.
If more diluted, it would be more colourless and lighter.
What makes the rate of diffusion higher?
Higher temperature of solvent.
What happens when a solid is added to water/ a solvent?
Water particles collide with solid particles, pulling them apart if soluble. If it is insoluble, it does nothing.
Precipitate
When a solid is formed in a liquid solution.
Saturated
When a solution cannot take any more solute to dissolve.
What affects solubility? (3)
- Temperature : the higher the temperature the higher the solubility of a solute.
- Stirring : increases rate of solubility but not actual solubility.
- Pressure : does not affect solubility of solids but for gas solutes as the pressure increases, solubility increases.
As temperature increases, why does the solubility of a solid increase?
Gives the liquid particles more kinetic energy.
When do gases take up more space?
When temp increases and pressure decreases.
When pressure increases, solubility of gases ___?
Increases
When temp increases, solubility of gases ___?
Increases
