Mixtures and Matter Flashcards
Intrinsic (give examples)
property does not change with size (such as smell, color, density, texture)
Extrinsic (give examples)
property changes with size (such as mass, volume)
Mixture
Can be separated into separate groups, not chemically bonded
-Homogenous; looks the same throughout
-Heterogenous; can see two distinct substances
Pure substance
Chemically bonded, requires a chemical reaction to seperate
-elements; Only on molecule (Au, Fe, O2)
-compounds; More than one molecule (H20, NaCI, CO2)
Solid
-definitive shape and volume
-particles vibrate
-greatest attraction
Liquid
-indefinite shape
-definite volume
-particles flow around
-medium attraction
Gas
-indefinite shape and volume (compressible)
-particles bounce around
-least attraction
