Mixtures Flashcards
1
Q
Mixtures (Impure Substances)
A
2 or more pure substances not chemically joined
2
Q
Homogeneous Mixture
A
Completely uniform in composition
- Same throughout
- One phase (layer)
3
Q
What are Homogeneous mixtures called?
A
Solutions
- Solute: what is being dissolved
- Solvent: what is doing the dissolving
4
Q
What are some examples of homogeneous mixtures?
A
- Sugar water (solid dissolved in liquid)
- Air (gas dissolved in gas)
- Alloy (solid dissolved in solid)
- Shaving Cream (gas dissolved in liquid)
5
Q
Heterogeneous Mixtures
A
Not uniformed in composition
- Not the same throughout
- More than 1 phase (layer)
6
Q
Suspension
A
Separate on their own
- particles separate by mass
- heavier on the bottom
7
Q
Colloid
A
Does not separate own their own
- particles are mixed together but not dissolved
- stay permanently suspended
- will not separate upon standing
8
Q
How can mixtures be identified and classified?
A
Homogeneous and Heterogeneous
9
Q
What are some examples of colloids?
A
- Jello
- Fog
- Clouds
- Smoke
- Paint
- Marshmallows
- Butter
10
Q
Tyndall Effect
A
Used to differentiate between a true solution and a suspension or colloid
- Solution: ions and molecules are too small to scatter visible light
- Suspension/ Colloids: the particles are too large to be dissolved and are large enough to scatter light
