Matter Flashcards
What are the groups that matter is classified in?
- Substance (pure substance)
2. Mixture (impure substance)
Elements
- Composed of only 1 type of atom
* Elements cannot be broken down by ordinary chemical means
Compounds
• 2 or more elements that have been chemically joined together to make a new substance
- Compounds have properties that are entirely different from its original components
- Compounds can only be broken down by chemical means
Mixtures (Impure Substances)
• 2 or more pure substances not chemically joined together
- Retain the properties of the original components
- Components may be mixed in any proportion
- Components may be separated by physical means such as filtering, distilling, dissolving etc.
Kinetic Theory of Matter
Matter is made up of particles which are in continual random motion
What are the states of matter?
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
Solid
Particles are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed a position
- Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Liquid
Particles of liquids are tightly packed, but are enough apart to slide over one another
- Liquids have an indefinite shape and a definite volume
Gas
Particles of gases are very far apart and move freely
- Gases have an indefinite shape and indefinite volume
What is the difference between a chemical change and a physical change?
Chemical Change: not getting back what you started with
Physical Change: can get back what you started with
What are the 2 types of change matter undergoes?
- Physical change
- Chemical change
Physical Change
- Melting
- Freezing
- Boiling
- Cutting
- Crushing
- Dissolving
Chemical changes can usually be identified with the following observations:
- Formation of an insoluble solid
- Bubbling or New Odor
- A color change
- An energy change
- Endothermic
- Exothermic
Endothermic
Takes in energy (gets cold)
