Mixtures Flashcards
meaning - pure substance, mixture and physical properties
pure substance - a substance made up of one type of particle
mixture - a number of substance that have different physical properties that are mixed together
physical properties - characteristics that are used to describe a substances particles
what happens when we mix 2 substances
the ones particles move in between the others they don’t join together
explain the properties of a mixture
the properties can stay the same or they can be a combination of both substances
what are the different methods of separation and give a sentence describing what they do or how you do it
hand sorting - using your hand to separate particles that have a different size, shape, colour or texture
sieving - use a sieve to separate solid that have different sized particles
filtration - use a filter to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid
use of magnets - we use magnets to separate a magnetic metal from a non magnetic substance
evaporation - we use heat to boil the liquid that has been mixed with a soluble solid and when the liquid evaporates the solid is left behind
distillation - it is the same as evaporation but we collect both the solute and the solvent through condensation we would also use this method to separate a solution of 2 liquids
chromatography - the use of a solvent to separate different pigments from their mixture
meaning: dissolve, solution, solute, solvent, soluble, insoluble, and evaporation
dissolve - when the particle of a solid spread out between the liquid particles and you can no longer tell the difference
solution - mixture containing a dissolved solid and a liquid
solute - the substance that dissolves when making a mixture
solvent - the liquid in a mixture
soluble - a solid that is able to dissolve in a liquid
insoluble - the opposite of a soluble solid
evaporation - the process of changing a liquid into a gas
