mixed methods Flashcards
what is triangulation?
is the combination of research methods in the same study
what are some examples of triangulation?
-two or more researchers using the same research technique
-one researcher using two or more research techniques
what is methodological pluralism?
form of theoretical triangulation
-uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to gain valid and reliable results
-known as the realist approach
strengths of mixed methods
-benefits from using both qualitative and quantitative data links to reliability and validity
-reserachers can measure both human behaviour and find underlying reasons behind this behaviour
weaknesses of mixed methods?
-the researcher may not have the expertise to do both qualitative and quantitative research
-the researcher may dedicate more time to the research methods and lose time and resources to focus on scaling up the sample size- affects representation and generalisability
examples of a mixed methods study?
Eileen Barker
-moonies
-used observations, questionaires, semi-structured interviews and official statistics
