Mitral Stenosis and Regurgitation Flashcards
1
Q
What is mitral stenosis ?
A
Narrow mitral valve so left atrium can not push blood to left ventricle
2
Q
What is mitral stenosis caused by?
A
-Rheumatic Heart Disease
-Infective Endocarditis
3
Q
What does mitral stenosis sound like?
A
-mid diastolic, low pitched rumbling
-loud S1
4
Q
What is mitral regurgitation?
A
- incompetent mitral valve allows blood to go back through during systolic contraction in left ventricle
5
Q
What does mitral regurgitation lead to?
A
- congestive heart failure
6
Q
What can you hear with a mitral regurgitation?
A
- pan-systolic, high pitched whistling as blood flows through leaky valve at high velocity
-radiates to left axilla
7
Q
What is the cause of mitral regurgitation?
A
-Idiopathic weakening of the valve with age
-Ischaemic heart disease
-Infective Endocarditis
-Rheumatic Heart Disease
-Connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers Danlos syndrome or Marfan syndrome
