Mitral Stenosis Flashcards
0
Q
Major cause of mitral stenosis
A
Rheumatic heart disease
1
Q
Consequences of stenosis
A
Increased left atrial pressure
Pulmonary oedema
Dyspnoea
Atrial fibrillation
If right ventricular failure - pulmonary hypertension
2
Q
Management of mitral stenosis
A
Avoid tachycardia
It shortens ventricular filling time
It increases right atrial pressure and risk of pulmonary oedema
3
Q
Management of mitral stenosis 2
A
Avoid fluid overload
Fluid management in labour
Diuretics may have a role
Keep woman on the “dry” side
4
Q
Treatment
A
Beta blockers - slow heart rate
Limit physical activity
Short 2nd stage and elective forceps
Good analgesia
Vigilant regarding arrhythmia - treat and anticoagulants
Avoid syntometrine
