Left atrium
What happens in the left atrium as a result of mitral stenosis?
Pressure increase causing dilation
What is the cardiac rhythm associated with mitral stenosis
AF - due to left atrium enlargement
What are the symptoms of mitral stenosis?
Dyspnoea, orthopnoea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea, haemoptysis, ascites, oedema, fatigue
What are the signs of mitral stenosis?
Malar flush, AF
What are mitral stenosis sounds on auscultation?
LOUD S1
mid-diastolic murmur at apex
How is mitral stenosis treated?
Diuretics for dyspnoea
Anticoagulants
Valvuloplasty
Balloon dilatation
What can mitral stenosis progress to?
Pulmonary hypertension and subsequent right sided heart failure
