What is an ace inhibitor?
Block the production of angiotensin converting enzyme
What is the action on an ACEi?
Reduce ACE production
Widen blood vessels
Reduce blood pressure
Who should be prescribed ACEi?
People younger than 55 who are not African
Who should not be prescribed ACEi?
African origin
Renal impairment
Peripheral vascular disease
Pregnant
What are the adverse effects of ACEi?
dry cough
Hyperkalaemia
What are examples of ACEi?
Lisinopril
Perindopril
Ramipril
What can be combined with ACEi to treat HTN?
- CCB OR thiazide diuretic
2. CCB AND thiazide diuretic
What should be prescribed for African patients?
ARB - angiotensin receptor blockers
Why are ACEi prescribed in younger people only?
Younger people have more Renin (produced in kidneys) so are more sensitive to ACEi
