Mitosis And Meiosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
Cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
Which cells are made mitosis?
All except sex cells
What happens in mitosis?
A cell’s divides into two new daughter cells . These daughter cells are identical to the cell that they came from and to each other. Each has a diploid number of chromosomes
When does mitosis happen ?(2)
- ) Mitosis occurs in growth. When living things grow they make new cells. Mitosis makes these new cells whether it is in growth of a baby, healing wound, germination of a seedling, or replacing red blood cells.
- ) Mitosis also occurs in asexual reproduction. The cells in the parent plant or animal divide to make me cells which form the new individual.
If a sperm cell and an egg cell both had 46 chromosomes what would happen at fertilization?
The fertilized egg would have 92 chromosomes twice as many as it should have.
What happens in meiosis?
Meiosis halves the number of chromosomes. So egg cells and sperm cells only have 23 chromosomes each. The fertilized egg will 46 chromosomes chromosomes, 23 from the mother and 23 from the father in the sperm.
What does haploid mean?
Half the diploid number of chromosomes.
Where does meiosis occur in males and females?
In the sex organs. The ovaries make egg cells by meiosis and the testes make sperm cells by meiosis.
Where does meiosis occur in plants?
The anther makes pollen by meiosis and the ovaries make eggs cells by meiosis.
In meiosis the daughter cells are not _______. They are genetically different and this contributes to ________.
Identical
Variation
True or false
Your chromosomes determine which sex you are
True
What is the 23rd pair of chromosomes called?
Sex chromosomes
What chromosomes do males have?
One long X chromosome and one much shorter Y chromosome
What chromosomes do females have?
Females have two X chromosomes
