mitosis and meiosis Flashcards
What is chromatin?
Complex of DNA and protein that forms chromosomes
Chromatin condenses to form chromosomes during cell division.
What are chromosomes?
Structures in the nucleus that carry genetic information
Chromosomes are the condensed form of chromatin.
What occurs during interphase?
Cell prepares for division by replicating chromosomes
Interphase is the beginning of the cell cycle.
Define mitosis.
Process where a cell divides and replicates itself
Mitosis leads to the formation of asexual body cells.
What happens during prophase?
Chromosomes pair up, nucleus begins to disappear, spindle fibers appear
Prophase is the first step of mitosis.
What are sister chromatids?
Paired chromosomes during cell division
Each chromosome consists of two sister chromatids.
What is the function of the centromere?
Holds sister chromatids together
What are spindle fibers?
Net that holds chromosomes in place during cell division
What occurs during metaphase?
Chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell or equator
What happens in anaphase?
Sister chromatids split and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell
What occurs during telophase?
Nucleus becomes visible, nuclear membrane begins to form, cells start to separate
Define cytokinesis.
Cytoplasm divides, cell splits into two identical daughter cells
What is cancer in relation to mitosis?
Uncontrolled mitosis caused by changes to DNA
What is the cell cycle?
Cells’ life cycle including interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis
What does interphase look like in a cell?
Nuclear envelope surrounds the nucleus
What is the purpose of mitosis?
To make more cells for growth and repair
List the four stages of mitosis.
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
What is cytokinesis and how does it differ in plant and animal cells?
Physical process of cell division dividing cytoplasm into two daughter cells
In plant cells, cytokinesis forms a cell plate; in animal cells, it forms a cleavage furrow.
Define genes.
Portions of DNA or chromosomes that code for specific traits
What are homologous chromosomes?
Chromosomes of the same length carrying genes for the same trait
What are gametes?
Sperm and egg cells/sex cells
Define haploid.
Half the normal amount of chromosomes (n=23)
Define diploid.
Normal amount of chromosomes (2n=46)
What is meiosis?
Sex cell division resulting in gametes
