Q

what is mitosis

A

process of cell division in which a cell splits to produce 2 genetically identical daughter cells with 46 chromosomes each, the same as the parent cell. meaning they are diploid cells because they have sets of chromosomes.

Q

what is meiosis

A

process of cell division that results in 4 haploid (having one set of chromosomes) daughter cells that are all genetically unique. each cell has 23 chromosomes, half that of the parent cell.

Q

stages of mitosis

A
  • interphase - cell grows. dna replicates
  • prophase - dna condenses into chromosomes. nucleus disappears
  • metaphase - chromosomes become visible and align at the equatorial plate
  • anaphase - chromosome pairs separate
  • telophase - 2 nuclear membranes form
  • cytokinesis - cytoplasm splints

Q

stages of meiosis

A
  • interphase - cell grows. dna replicates
  • prophase - dna condenses into chromosomes exchange genetic information through crossing over. nucleus disappears.
  • metaphase - chromosomes become visible and align at the equatorial plate
  • anaphase - chromosome pairs separate
  • telophase - 2 nuclear membranes form
  • cytokinesis - cytoplasm splints
  • interphase2 - cell grows. dna does NOT replicate
  • prophase2 - chromosomes condense again
  • metaphase2 - chromosomes line up at the equatorial plate
  • anaphase2 - chromatids split
  • telophase2 - nuclear membrane forms. chromosomes decondense
  • cytokenesis2 - cells split. 4 daughter cells

Q

mitosis and meiosis differences

A
mitosis
5 stages(not including interphase)
Somatic cells
2 diploid daughter cells
Chromosome number stays the same
For growth and repair
meiosis
10 stages(not including interphase)
Gamete cells
4 haploid daughter cells
Chromosome number is halved
For sexual reproduction
