Mitosis Flashcards
What is the purpose of MITOSIS?
To create A DUPLICATE of a cell in order to:
a. ) help the cell function efficiently
b. ) grow an organism
c. ) heal an organism
MITOSIS is a form of ______ reproduction
MITOSIS is a form of ASEXUAL reproduction
What cells undergo MITOSIS?
Some SOMATIC CELLS (body cells)
What is the ORDER of MITOSIS?
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, Cytokinesis
(I P M A T C)
(Intern! Pass Me A Taco, Chief!)
What are the THREE stages of Interphase?
G1 (cellular function, organelle duplication)
S (DNA replication)
G2 (double-checks, repairs errors in DNA)
What occurs during Prophase?
- nuclear membrane dissolves
- chromatin -> (sister) chromatids
- spindle fibers form
Which occurs first: Metaphase or Anaphase?
Metaphase (chromatids align on central axis)
What occurs during Telophase?
- nuclear membrane reforms
- (daughter) chromatids -> chromatin
- spindle fibers disappear
- cell membrane begins to pinch in the middle
What divides the cell during Cytokinesis?
Cell membrane and/or cell wall (plant cells only)
What cells do NOT undergo MITOSIS?
- muscle cells
- nerve cells
- spermatocytes and oocytes (reproductive cells)
- dead cells
What are the purpose of Telomeres?
They protect DNA and become increasingly damaged during DNA duplication, limiting how many times cells duplicate.
